BREAKING: Panic in Turkey as blasts rock capital Ankara ~ A series of explosions in Turkey – VIDEO

A SERIES of explosions have rocked the Turkish capital Ankara, according to reports, just a day after a Russian jet was downed.

The blasts caused a number of casualties and spread panic across the city, which was targeted by Islamic State militants in October when bombings killed more than 100 people.

Emergency services were alerted to the explosions at about 1.30pm local time.

The incident was thought to have occurred at a factory producing dry ice, with some suggesting it had been triggered by a gas explosion following reports of a smell of gas in the area.

Local officials said five people were seriously injured.

Turkish troops were deployed to the scene along with firefighters and police, but investigators found no evidence of a coordinated attack.

It comes a little more than 24 hours after a Russian jet was downed by Turkey after it buzzed Turkish airspace.

Tensions between Turkey and Russia have escalated since yesterday's shooting down of a Su-24 fighter jet in north-west Syria.

The Turkish embassy in Moscow was pelted with rocks and eggs by crowds angry at the incident.

Initial fears that it could have been a bomb planted by an ISIS sleeper cell or a retaliation by Moscow were dampened by Turkish officials who insisted there was no terror link.

In October, two bombs were detonated outside Ankara's main railway station, killing 102 people and injuring more than 400.

The bombing appeared to target a trade union rally and was the deadliest in modern Turkish history.
